FRC Quarterly Newsletter: December 2021

MONTH OF GIVING
On November 30, Family Resource Center launched our “Month of Giving” campaign. A goal for this campaign is not only to encourage end-of-the-year donations, but to thank all of those who already support us, and to show just how important donations are. Donations, whether monetary or in-kind, allow us to ensure that our clients have the best level of support and care. They allow us to provide comfort, education, and peace to our clients year-round.
If you would like to learn more, please visit the donate tab of our website.

LAP EXPANSION
Thanks to the generous contributions of the Twin County Community Foundation, FRC is proud to announce that we have expanded the Lethality Assessment Program (LAP) into the Galax Police Department.
LAP provides an easy and effective method for law enforcement to identify victims of Intimate Partner Violence who are at the highest risk of being seriously injured or killed by their intimate partners, and immediately connect them to FRC for help.
We are so excited to continue expanding this program throughout our service area with the help of donations from the community.

FRC SPOTLIGHT: SISSY GRAVLEY, C.T.S.S.
Sissy Gravley is an ATSS Certified Trauma Services Specialist. For the last 25 years, she has worked to help victims of domestic and sexual violence in our community. She provides support, advocacy and case management for individuals and families, assisting victims with emergency shelter and transition to stable housing, safety planning, court accompaniment and on-going supportive care. Sissy is also part of FRC’s on-call team, ensuring that victims of violence have access to help 24/7. Sissy collaborates with the community for donations needed to meet client needs and has coordinated volunteer efforts.
Sissy says, “I love seeing people get out of the abuse and and take the steps needed so they can live a violence–free life. Domestic violence will always be here, but we are also here 24/7 to help.”
We are so grateful to Sissy for her continuing work to help those affected by violence to find hope, safety and healing.

LATINOS IN VIRGINIA
In order to make our services more accessible to those who speak Spanish, FRC started a partnership with Latinos in Virginia for translation and advocacy services. If you know someone who needs help out of a violent situation but has a language barrier, please call 804-658-3341.

BIAV PARTNERSHIP
FRC is pleased to announce our partnership with the Brain Injury Association of Virginia. We’re working to explore the relationships between domestic violence and traumatic brain injuries. This will allow further research into better intervention and advocacy efforts for domestic violence victims.

MINDFUL MINUTE
Sometimes the holidays can bring more stress and sadness than joy. Whenever you are feeling down, try the G.L.A.D. technique developed by Donald Altman. Think of:
• one thing you are grateful for
• one thing you’ve learned
• one thing you’ve accomplished
• and one thing that delighted you that day.
Regularly practicing G.L.A.D. can help reframe your thinking!
